iPhone Vs. iPod Touch What To Choose?

by Juan on September 12th, 2007

I’m going to be in the market for a new iPod. It’s time to replace my 5th gen iPod. Well ok, maybe not yet time because it’s not broken. I just want to replace it.

I’m now at a quandary. I’m not sure which one I’ll choose, the iPhone or the iPod Touch. The decision was easier a few days ago since I won’t be able to use the iPhone here in Manila. I either had to get a software or hardware unlock done for it. Both of which costs a lot of money on top the cost of the iPhone. However it seems that thanks to the iPhone Dev Team a free and open source unlocking software is now available.

This severely complicates things. I was bent on getting an iPod Touch already when it comes out here in Manila. I was going to wait for the Asian version of the iPhone next year and the iPod Touch was supposed to tide me over till then. With the unlocking software, I’m now confused.

Should I get an iPod Touch or an iPhone. Assuming I get an 8GB iPhone or an 16GB iPod Touch both roughly costing the same, which would be the better choice?

On one hand with the iPhone I get a phone with the best iPod to date, but with just 8GB of space and no official warranty locally. I do however get a 2.0 megapixel camera and bluetooth.

On the other hand the iPod Touch will be officially available (not grey market) here in Manila. For roughly the same price I’ll get twice the storage. The assurance that I can get it serviced here if anything happens. It’s also a bit thinner.

My original plan was to wait for the asian release of the iPhone and hopefully it will have 3G and bigger storage. But the thought of being able to use an iPhone now is extremely tempting.

So what do you think? Help me decide. Leave me comments below.

10 opinions for iPhone Vs. iPod Touch What To Choose?

I would personally be choosing the iPhone since I prefer to carry just one device. Plus, storage isn’t really a concern for me. If I can put my podcasts and a few songs in it, I would be already be satisfied.

Anyway, just came across a post on applephoneshow.com. It shows a short list of what you will be giving up when you choose the iPod Touch over the iPhone.

Either way, if you can afford to wait (maybe 1Q 2008), then I suggest you do. The 2nd gen would most probably have 3g, better camera, MMS support and video capture.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the input Stephen. Carrying one device is also one factor that’s giving me a hard time in making a decision. I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the fact that I’m draining the battery of my phone quickly because of entertainment. I might have an emergency that requires me to use the phone and when that time comes I don’t want to be low on battery because I watched one too many videos.

But the convenience of carrying one device is great.

    Decisions, decisions…

    Hi Juan,

I don’t know how you intend to use the entertainment capabilities of the iPhone; but for me, it would just be to pass away time (waiting in line, stuck in traffic, resting while your girl shops, etc). I still prefer to watch Movies/TV shows on a Mac which has a bigger screen.

Besides, 7-hour continuous video playback (or 24-hour continuous audio playback) isn’t bad at all. I bet watching a 2-3-hour video plus listening to about 3-4 hours worth of audio (podcasts and music) will still get you through the entire day without draining the battery completely. I’ve yet to hear people complain about the iPhone’s battery life, so I will presume that it holds up pretty well.

Although, if you plan to use the device mostly for recreational purposes, then yeah, I suppose the iPod Touch would be a better choice. It really boils down to how you wish to spend your time on them.

At any rate, I suggest you wait till September 18. Apple will be having an event in UK and they may release an iPhone more suited to the European/Asian market (*cough* 3G :p)

I would personally wait for the next iPhone iteration or when Apple officially releases the iPhone in our country, whichever comes first. I can afford to wait since my Motorola V6 is still in a good condition.

Good luck and keep us updated on your choice!

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen and I hear that you can jailbreak iPod Touches to make free phone calls

This is best if you don’t like being on contract
