The Tale of the Missing iPhones
Apple announced that it has sold more than 3.7 million iPhones and AT&T has confirmed around 2 million. Where did the 1.7 million go to? Piper Jaffray guesses that a part of it has been sold in Europe and some are the unlocked phones in the United States. etc…
That assumption or guess in my opinion while correct is still inaccurate. I think that the missing 1.7 million can be shared with those mentioned but a big part of that belongs to units that are outside of the U.S. already and have been unlocked.
Why do I say that? Here in Manila it’s no secret that people have iPhones here. A lot for that matter. I’ve seen and know people personally who own an iPhone. In a mall nearby, there’s actually an iPhone economy already. Vendors there sell and unlock iPhones for a premium. I can’t imagine that this type of thing is only confined to this area. I’d presume that it’s also prevalent in other countries.
It’s certainly plausible that Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and other neighboring Asian countries also have unlocked units of iPhones in their hands.
So while AT&T only reported 2 million iPhones sold, I don’t think that Apple was reporting a false number. I think they’re number is spot on and they just can’t openly admit that a lot of the iPhones they’ve sold are now in the hands of people other than those who patronize AT&T.
