Skype With Video For Mac Works
Warning!!! This is a beta preview of the video function of Skype for Mac OS X. Try it at your own risk. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.. With that in mind.. on with the show.
So I downloaded the Skype Preview Release 1.5.0.52 just awhile ago. I installed it without any hitches. I attached my iSight. Bugged anyone on my contact list and asked if they had Skype. Added them to my contact lists and proceeded to find someone to test it with.
First I tried it with one friend, we couldn’t get it to work. He could hear me but I couldn’t hear him. After minutes or trying, we found out that there was something wrong with his system because even iChat didn’t work. I tried connecting with other friends on iChat and it worked. So I knew my system was ok. Finally some other contact of mine came online in Skype. Luckily she also had a web cam. Cool.. Time for some video.
I was able to connect successfully with my friend. I was able to see her video feed and vice-versa. Although it became choppy. Both audio and video. The processor of my Powerbook was working in the 90% range and above. We chatted for awhile then decided to call it quits because the audio was already poor. She was using a PC with a usb web cam.
I tried looking for other people to talk to and finally found another friend on Skype who also happened to have an iSight connected. We tried the video chat again. It was slightly better than my previous chat with my friend on a PC. Still the video was choppy. The audio was better. Maybe it was due more to the internet connection rather than Skype itself. We tried iChat afterwards and that was better. Video and audio were both good.
If you’re doing Mac to Mac video chats, iChat will still run around Skype. But if you want to do video chat with someone on a PC, Skype is worth a try. Hopefully in time, the Skype team will improve the performance greatly.
