Macbook Line To Be Redesigned

by Juan on October 2nd, 2007

According to this blog post at MacSlice, the Macbook line up is set to be redesigned. This includes both the Macbook and Macbook Pro range of portables.

The post states these specs:

MacBook

  • Black & Silver aluminum
  • Slimmer and lighterthan current model
  • Keyboard that resembles Apple’s new desktop keyboards
  • New, larger trackpad with “unusual” features
  • Prices will be reduced to compete with the PC laptop market
  • Biometric fingerprint reader (May be part of the “unusual trackpad” or will be concealed in the aluminum chassis)
  • SuperDrive

MacBook Pro

  • New design, Black & Silver aluminum
  • Lighter than current model
  • New style backlit Apple keyboard
  • Larger trackpad with “unusual” features
  • Improved battery life
  • Biometric fingerprint reader (May be part of the “unusual trackpad” or will be concealed in speakers)
  • LED in 17 inch screens
  • Core 2 Extreme Mobile (X7900) model with 2.8GHz
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8600m GT (256mb on lower model 512mb option on higher)
  • SuperDrive & Option for Blu-ray (Single layer)

Definitely the Macbook Pros are up for a redesign. It still sports the same design as the Aluminum Powerbooks. While the design is still nice it needs to be updated. Heck it’s several years old. Still, it’s a testament to the genius that is Jonathan Ive. His design is classic.

As for the Macbooks, in my opinion they’re still relatively fresh. Although, I’m seeing that Apple’s current design trend does not involve the white plastic anymore. So the Macbook line might need to shift to an aluminum design. Much to the pleasure of our 12″ Powerbook totting brethren. Who, until now have refused to move into the Intel era because they love the size and form factor of the 12″ Powerbook so much. Trust me, I know several people who are still adamant in keeping their 12″ Powerbooks till Apple releases a small aluminum Macbook/Pro. Even if Intel based Macs are superior in performance.

I for one am also looking forward to a smaller, aluminum Macbook or Macbook Pro. Having lived with the 17″ Macbook Pro for several months, it’s beginning to be a pain to bring around. Not that I bring it around that much but it’s just too big to be portable. It’s fine sitting on my desk or for lugging around the house, but any farther than that and you’re just asking for trouble.

If Apple comes out with a small aluminum Macbook/Macbook Pro, I might just ditch the 17″ and get an iMac and that small Macbook….

Your thoughts please…
