Always Have Protection

by Juan on April 13th, 2008

No I’m not talking about that kind of protection! Hotspots are common nowadays and a lot of people work at their local Starbucks or [inset favorite coffee place]. Most of these places have free wifi or paid wifi access. Given that benefit most of us are enticed to work out of our office in the comforts of our favorite hang out.

While these places are nice and convenient, security isn’t certain. You’ll never know if there are malicious individuals who are snooping around and waiting to sniff out passwords, login details and whatnots. It’s always prudent to have safety precautions in place just to make sure that you don’t fall prey to these individuals.

My friend Vic recommended HotSpot Shield by AnchorFree. It’s a piece of software that helps secure your connection at public hotspots. It does this by creating a Virtual Private Network (VPN) between your computer and the router at the public hotspot. This hides all your information from people wanting to gain access to it.

I’ve tried this and so far it seems ok. There’s an ad that’s place on top of the web pages that you view. That’s ok though. I don’t mind it at all since it’s free and they need to make money somehow.

Hotspot Shield is available for download for OS 10.5 and 10.4 as well as Windows Vista, XP and 2000.

Get it here.
